Sorry this entry is SO LATE, but I have been traveling almost non-stop for the past few months, and I tried to blog from afar but kept having techincal difficulties. In June we once again gathered at Valerie's place, once again a group of 7 women (I swear we invite lots of men every month but they just don't come anymore!), and talked over a wonderful meal about experiences that shaped and challenged our faith. Particularly, we focused on how some people managed to maintain a core of faith despi…

The May Amazing Faiths Dinner was very special for me because I got to host it at my house for the first time! I love cohosting and organizing too, but it was really great to have everyone over at my place, and have my home filled with friends, laughter and sharing. I had just returned from my superfun adventure in the Andes (check out my flickr stream for photos: www.flickr.com/photos/atoosa9, and also look at my friend Andrew's for even more cool shots from the trip: www.flickr.com/photos/andr…

This month was full of opportunities to explore Faith and expand the circle of unity. We had another lovely, relaxing, inspiring evening of great food and conversation on April 10th as Valerie hosted this month's installment of the Amazing Faiths Dinner. This time I was the only person from the original November dinner that was there. I thought at first that was kind of sad, but then I realized there was this whole group of new people still excited about the project and determined to keep doing…

"By the power of the Holy Spirit, working through his soul, man is able to perceive the Divine reality of things. All great works of art and science are witnesses to this power of the Spirit."
(Abdu'l-Baha, Paris Talks, p. 85)
This passage from the Baha'i Sacred Writings inspired me when I was growing up to view my pursuit of a career in science as a spiritual path. Many artists and scientists I've spoken to or read about also view their work as a communion with the spiritual world and take th…

So April is upon us, and being the slacker blogger that I am, I have not yet told you guys (all 7 of you that read this blog, that is!) about our March Amazing Faiths Dinner Dialogue. It was once again a unifying, eye opening evening of laughter and sharing, poignant moments and delicious homemade food. We used the dialogue questions on Love and Faith that we were sent last month, and they worked beautifully to stimulate open and heartfelt conversations. I learned so much, as usual, and felt so…

January offered another chance for an Amazing Faiths experience, and it continues to be mind and heart opening and so much fun! This time, we had a more intimate dinner with 8 people attending, all women. Judy hosted again and this time we made it potluck (which worked out beautifully). Shannon, Judy and I were the only ones there this time who had also attended the first dinner diaologue in November, but we hope the other 13 people will join us next time - we'll keep inviting! This time, we bor…

Last month Judy and I had such a transforming experience at the Amazing Faiths Dinner at Katrina's house that we decided to continue the tradition and co-host a dinner this month. On December 12th, we gathered at Judy's house and had a wonderful night of food and sharing. We had invited some friends who didn't get to participate in the project last month to come see what it was about, and we had about 10 new people joining the group (6 people who participated last month also came back for this o…

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! I had a great weekend with my family, and was thanking God for the new friends and new opportunities that I have found through this wonderful project.
I wanted to share with everyone a resource that I mentioned to some of you at the dinner dialogue in November. It's called
Ocean, and it's a free downloadable searchable library of the published religious texts of most of the world's major religions.
You can download it by…

I truly enjoyed having dinner with so many 'amazing' people, it was so refreshing to have such a healthy religious dialogue with everyone.

I was just looking at the Houston Chronicle's religion blog which is becoming really interesting. Kristina Hernndobler is blogging daily about religious issues. But one of the things I saw for the first time this evening was a video of one of the Amazing Faiths Dinners shot by a Houston Chronicle videographer.
It was really interesting. Take a look at

I'm not sure about blogs...I'm just learning. But I would love to talk with others about their journeys, so, please, join me, if you would like to tell your story.
Everybody has a story. That's why little children implore, "Tell me a story!" I believe that's truly how we learn the important "stuff."

I sat in my therapist's office in Austin, Texas.
I had been married for 24 years with 2 children. I had a radio talk show, Monday through Friday from 3:00-5:00, and I ran a political organization, based on "family values."
What I didn't have was peace.
After I described my understanding of what God required of me, my therapist blurted out, "And that's why people hate God!"
I have a conservative background. I've been serious about follo…

On two occasions yesterday I was surprised by people commenting on the Amazing Faiths Project. First the pastor at my church in her sermon yesterday talked about her impressions of a dinner event that she moderated. She indicated that a number of people in telling their faith stories during the dinner recounted that issues of religious tolerance were an issue in their families, as people married individuals of different religious backgrounds, or converted to one another's religious faiths. Toler…

It's that season again for the Annual Holiday Cookie Bake-a-thon. I can't wait! A friend had made an interesting remark about the variance between her cooking and her sibling's - people seem to go gaga over her buttermilk pies, whereas her siblings, although made with the same recipe and using the same techniques, aren't as raved about. She thought that her food gets a special edge because she loves to cook - and that Love really can be an ingredie…

I had a transformational experience lat night! I was expecting to meet open minded, knowledgeable people, and I did. But the HUMANITY, the HONESTY, and the COMPASSION shared around the table was the most moving part of it all.
From Jewish to Wicca, Muslim to Atheist, Catholic to Unitarian Universalist to Mormon, everyone shared their understanding of the divine and the role their beliefs play in their lives with honesty and respect.
At the end of the evening, I… Continue

We truly appreciated the fellowship, the exchange of ideas, and the respectful environment created in the Ali home. We feel inspired by the vision of this project and by meeting others who share this vision. It was such a positive experience to meet and dialogue with you all. Thanks to you all, and thanks to the Ali family for the warm hospitality and excellent moderation of this event.

It was truly "amazing"! I attended with a very good friend from the Maasai tribe of Kenya, East Africa. Was very encouraging after being in Houston for 4 years to socialise with such a great diversity of people from not only various faith backgrounds, but races and cultures as well. Some of the people present had also lived and travelled abroad which made the group even more exciting and conversationally diverse. The frank openness and authentic honesty shared among each and every person present…

I woke up this morning after moderating one of the dinners with the words of the guests still sounding in my ears. Our Buddhist guest talked about life as a series of existences, our Baha'i guest explained how the unity of belief in her faith helped her make the transition from one place to another much easier by creating a sense of family wherever she goes including Houston. A guest from Pakistan who is Christian spoke about his experiences with interfaith relations in a dominant Muslim culture…

[It is my hope that each participant will take the message of love and hope that was shared beyond the dinner table and into the world. I believe that each of us has the ability to believe the best in each other and fight our internal fears driven by external messages we recive all day long. Each faith represented shared the same belief that love can and will be the guiding force for human caring and understanding. Please blog, you tube, facebook and talk about what is good in each faith and not…

The Amazing Faiths Project's Houston Dinner Dialogues reached a milestone today. There are now 798 people signed up to participate, either as Guests, Moderators, or Hosts for the Dinner Dialogue on November 15th.
It is very exciting to be associated with the project and to see it reach its goals for this year. In addition to the Houston project, there are also new projects in Brenham, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio starting for the first time this year. An…

Last night I had the privilege of being invited to be a guest at the City-wide Iftar Dinner sponsored by the Institute for Interfaith Dialog in Houston. The dinner featured a number of speakers and a fine meal at the Marriot West Loop South. Iftar dinners are given in Muslim homes on a daily basis during the month of Ramadan which began Sept 12th. The dinner breaks the fast that takes place each day for a month for Islamic believers. The fast is rigorous, no food or drink from sunup to sundown.…
